Nelson Page was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up in the West hills of Portland. He attended Wilson High School where he heavily participated in choir, debate, and speech tournaments. After graduation from high school, Nelson attended the University of Oregon for two years, but then transferred back to Portland State University – he graduated in 1975 with a major in political science and a minor in business. Nelson then proceeded to attending Georgetown University’s Law School. Upon graduation from law school, Nelson was on the verge of joining a large Portland law firm when – at the last minute – a friend asked him if he was willing to apply with him for a one-year clerkship with the Alaska Supreme Court. He had never considered Alaska, but figured it might be fun. Subsequently, he was offered a job; unfortunately, Nelson’s friend did not receive an offer. In August, 1979, Nelson arrived in Anchorage, not knowing what to expect. However, by December, Nelson called the Portland law firm and told them that he would not be coming back to Oregon. In 1979, Nelson was hired at Burr, Pease and Kurtz, where he has practiced ever since. Nelson’s practice currently consists of construction claims and architects and engineers malpractice. Nelson shares a house with his former foster son, who is Yupik Eskimo – he was born prematurely and was in need of medical assistance that his village could not provide. Eventually, Nelson’s former foster son moved back to his village when he was strong enough to do so, but after graduating from high school, he decided he wanted to move back to the big city. As for sports and such, Nelson watches a little football from time to time, and lets his foster son talk him into going to the Great Alaska Shootout games every November. His preferences – where physical activities are concerned – are more along the lines of hiking and skiing. He also manages to put a few miles on his bike every summer. Nelson still finds time to go to Oregon in order to visit family and hike the Cascade Mountains. His indoor activities include going to the movies (he frequently goes with fellow board member Pam Jennings and her husband Bill) and good food. His current favorite restaurant is the Bear Tooth – “You can get good food and a movie all at the same time!”
Rachael Pope is a welcome addition to the AYC Board. She has lived in Anchorage since December of 2005, and is a home schooled Senior. She has lived in Florida, Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Italy. She found out about Anchorage Youth Court in the Sourdough Sentinel (the Air Force Base newspaper). Rachael received the Golden Gavel Award in December, 2006 for receiving the highest grade on the AYC Bar Exam. Since then, Rachael has handled almost thirty court cases for AYC. She has assisted AYC with various fund raising events such as gift wrapping and Gavel Games. She also helped register new members at the Faces of AYC evening in September, 2007. Rachael is excited about attending college where she hopes to major in either Communications/Marketing or Pre-Law. Miss Pope’s other talents include playing piano, speed skating, and singing with the Anchorage Concert Chorus. Rachael’s favorite part of Anchorage Youth Court is helping other teenagers who have made mistakes and learning more about Alaska’s juvenile justice system.
